Phil Ivey has been branded as the number one poker competitor on the planet by most of the top-ranked pros. Phil was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to New Jersey before reaching the age of 1. His grandfather showed him to one cent-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From that point on, he was addicted to poker and wished to pickup every little thing he possibly could about the game. Phil routinely would tell his grandparents that he wanted to be a professional poker player. Phil didn't let the detrimental comments from others annihilate his goal of becoming one of the strongest poker competitors in the world.

He began playing intently after acquiring a false ID with the name of Jerome. He sharpened his abilities at the poker rooms of Atlantic City. The beginning number of years for Phil were a learning opportunity and winning was not a common thing at the time. He made his mark at the 2000 WSOP when he achieved 2 final tables and came away with his first WSOP bracelet, in a two dollar, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha game. At the last table he destroyed quite a few of the better known pros including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.

Phil made a decision to take his skills to the successive level and moved out west to Las Vegas. Phil continues to play in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players in the world. Phil credits his success to discipline and an immeasurable passion for poker. He states that he is learning every single day and is incredibly humble about his achievements. He knows he makes blunders in each session of poker and constantly aspires to get better.

Even though Phil has won some large tournaments, he prefers winning cash games on a normal basis.
