Howard Lederer lived in a family of five in which he liked participating in numerous card games at a young age. He found himself getting very competitive in these card games while competing against his dad. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to put college on hold for a little while and headed to New York City to play some serious chess. While participating in chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard's first two years were tough as he played countless hours and lose a majority of the time. He earned some extra cash by being an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He judged he might better his game by adjusting his life away from poker. He made an effort to get more rest and focus even more on poker.

The actual advancement in his skills happened when he began betting at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best gamblers would regularly compete against each other. Howard was able to access several of the foremost minds in chess. With their help, he would tweak his logical thinking skills. He used these strategy ideas in the game of NL Texas Holdem.

Howard also assisted his sister Annie Duke master the game of poker. Annie was a superb student of the game as she would consistently be asking questions about the right way to make the proper choice. Howard Lederer told Annie Duke to move out to Sin City and play in the WSOP competition. Annie Duke is one of the greatest women players the poker arena today. Howard relocated to Las Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and played cash games for the subsequent 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, Howard made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
