Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complicated but popular poker games. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once obscure variation, has increased in popularity so quickly.

Omaha 8 or better starts just like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to each player. A round of betting ensues where gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are given out, this is known as the flop. Another round of betting happens. Once all the players have in turn called or folded, a further card is flipped on the turn. an additional sequence of wagering happens and then the river card is revealed. The players must attempt to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where many entrants often get confused. Unlike Holdem, in which the board can make up every player's hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to use precisely 3 cards from the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. No more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It's the strongest possible hand out of everyone's, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It's the identical notion in almost all poker games.

The lower hand is more complex, but really free's up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don't count. A low hand is the worst hand that could be put together, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don't count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there's no low hand available, the high hand wins the entire pot.

Although it seems complex at the start, after a couple of hands you will be agile enough to get the basic subtleties of the game with ease. Seeing as you have individuals betting for the low and betting for the high, and since such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better offers an overwhelming assortment of betting options and seeing that you have many players battling for the high hand, along with several shooting for the low hand. If you love a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha/8.
