Howard Lederer was born into in a family of 5 in which he loved playing different card games at a young age. He discovered himself becoming really aggressive in the above-mentioned card games as he was playing his dad. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard decided to put higher education on hold for a bit and moved away to New York to participate in some formidable chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard's 1st 2 years were difficult as he played countless hours and lost a majority of the time. He earned some extra money by being an assistant for the poker players. He judged he could improve his game by analyzing his life away from poker. He brought about an attempt to get more rest and focus attention even more on the game.

The actual advancement in his skills happened when he started gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best players would often challenge one another. He had access into a few of the best minds in chess. With their assistance, he would hone his cunning thinking skills. He used these strategic ideas in the game of NL holdem.

Howard Lederer also assisted his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. She was an excellent student of the game as she would consistently be asking questions about the right way to make the proper choice. Howard told Annie to move out to Sin City and compete in the World Series of Poker competition. Annie Duke is one of the best women players the poker world has ever seen. Howard Lederer relocated to Las Vegas in 1993 and competed in money games for the successive decade. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, Howard decided to participate in more tournaments.
