Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most complicated but popular poker variations. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible variation, has increased in acceptance so amazingly.

Omaha/8 starts just like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to each player. A sequence of betting follows in which gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. Three cards are dealt out, this is referred to as the flop. Another round of wagering ensues. After all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, an additional card is revealed on the turn. Another round of betting ensues at which point the river card is revealed. The entrants must attempt to put together the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where many entrants get baffled. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, where the board can be every player's hand, in Omaha hi-low the player must use exactly 3 cards from the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the strongest hand out of everyone's, it doesn't matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the very same approach in just about every poker game.

A lower hand is more complex, but certainly opens up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that could be made, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don't count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no low hand available, the high hand wins the whole pot.

Although it seems complicated initially, following a couple of hands you will be able to get the basic subtleties of the game simply enough. Since you have individuals wagering for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at once, Omaha 8 or better provides an overwhelming collection of wagering choices and owing to the fact that you have several players trying for the high, as well as many battling for the low. If you love a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it is worth your time to play Omaha Hi-Lo.
