Howard Lederer was born into in a family of five where he loved betting on numerous card games at a young age. He found himself becoming really competitive in these card games as he was playing his dad. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to place college on hold for a little bit and relocated to New York to participate in some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard's first 2 years were rough as he played many hours and lost most times. He earned some extra money by becoming an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He judged he could better his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He brought about an attempt to get more rest and concentrate even more on poker.

The real advancement in his abilities began when he started betting at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the the most favorable gamblers would regularly play against each other. Howard had access into a number of the foremost players in chess. With their help, he would hone his strategic thinking abilities. Howard applied these strategy concepts to the game of NL hold'em.

Howard Lederer also assisted his sibling Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie was an excellent student of the game as she would always be asking questions about how to make the correct decision. Howard told Annie to head out to Las Vegas and compete in the WSOP tournaments. Annie is one of the best women players the poker world today. Howard Lederer headed to Las Vegas in 1993 and participated in money games for the subsequent decade. When the WPT gained popularity, Howard made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
