Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker games. It's a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once obscure variation, has increased in popularity so rapidly.

Omaha hi lo begins exactly like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to each player. A sequence of betting ensues where gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are given out, this is referred to as the flop. Another sequence of betting happens. Once all the players have either called or folded, an additional card is revealed on the turn. an additional round of wagering happens and then the river card is revealed. The players must attempt to put together the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where a number of players often get flustered. Unlike Hold'em, where the board can make up every player's hand, in Omaha hi lo the player has to utilize precisely 3 cards on the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the strongest possible hand out of everyone's, it doesn't matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It's the very same concept in nearly every poker game.

The low hand is more difficult, but really free's up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don't count. A low hand is the worst hand that could be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don't count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there's no low hand presented, the high hand takes the whole pot.

It may seem complex at first, following a few rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the basic subtleties of play with ease. Since you have people betting for the low and betting for the high, and since such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha Hi-Lo offers an exciting collection of betting possibilities and because you have several individuals shooting for the high hand, as well as many shooting for the low hand.
