Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five in which he loved playing numerous card games at a young age. He discovered himself becoming really aggressive in these card games as he was competing against his dad. After graduating from Sr. High school, Howard decided to place college on hold for a little while and moved to New York City to compete in some big-time chess. While playing chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard's 1st 2 years were tough as he would play many hours and don't win most times. He earned some extra cash by being an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He judged he could improve his game by analyzing his life away from poker. He brought about an attempt to get more rest and concentrate even more on the game.

The real improvement in his skills began when he began betting at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the the most favorable gamblers would often play against each other. He was able to access a number of the greatest minds in chess. With their help, he would hone his strategic thinking techniques. Howard applied these strategic concepts to the game of No-Limit Texas Holdem.

He also helped his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. She was an excellent student of the game as she constantly asked questions about how to make the proper choice. He told Annie to head out to Vegas and compete in the WSOP tournaments. Annie is one of the best female players the poker world has ever seen. He moved to Sin City in 1993 and competed in money games for the following 10 years. When the WPT gained popularity, Howard made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
