Howard Lederer lived in a family of 5 in which he enjoyed betting on numerous card games when he was young. He found himself getting really competitive in these card games while competing against his father. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to place college on hold for a little while and relocated to New York City to play some big-time chess. While playing chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard's first 2 years were tough as he would play extensive hours and lost a majority of the time. He earned some extra cash by becoming an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he possibly could boost his game by analyzing his life away from poker. He brought about an attempt to get more rest and concentrate more on the game.

The actual advancement in his skills happened when he began betting at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best gamblers would regularly challenge each other. He had access into a few of the best players in chess. With their assistance, Howard would sharpen his logical thinking abilities. He used these strategy concepts in the game of NL Texas Holdem.

He also assisted his sister Annie Duke learn poker. She was a great student of the game as she would consistently be asking questions about the right way to make the proper choice. Howard told Annie Duke to move out to Vegas and compete in the WSOP competition. She is one of the strongest female players the poker arena has ever seen. Howard moved to Sin City in Nineteen Ninety Three and participated in cash games for the next decade. When the WPT gained popularity, he decided to play more tournaments.
