Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most difficult but well-loved poker variations. It's a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible game, has grown in popularity so rapidly.

Omaha/8 begins just like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to each player. A round of wagering ensues where players can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are dealt out, this is referred to as the flop. Another sequence of betting ensues. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, an additional card is flipped on the turn. Another round of betting happens and then the river card is revealed. The entrants must attempt to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a few players get confused. Contrasted to Texas Hold 'Em, in which the board can make up everyone's hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player has to utilize exactly 3 cards on the board, and exactly two hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It's the best possible hand out of every player's, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the identical notion in almost all poker games.

The lower hand is more complicated, but really opens up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that could be made, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there's no low hand presented, the higher hand takes the complete pot.

Although it seems difficult initially, following a couple of rounds you will be able to pick up on the fundamental nuances of the game easily enough. Seeing as you have players wagering for the low and betting for the high, and since such a large number of cards are being used at the same time, Omaha hi low offers an exciting assortment of betting choices and because you have numerous individuals shooting for the high, along with many shooting for the low. If you love a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to play Omaha 8 or better.
