Howard Lederer was born into in a family of five in which he enjoyed playing numerous card games when he was young. He found himself becoming very aggressive in these card games as he was competing against his father. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to place higher education on hold for a little while and relocated to New York City to play some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard's initial two years were rough as he would play countless hours and do not win a majority of the time. He made some additional cash by being an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He judged he possibly could improve his game by balancing his life away from poker. He brought about an attempt to get more rest and concentrate more on poker.

The definite advancement in his skills happened when he started gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the the most favorable gamblers would often play against one another. Howard was able to access several of the foremost minds in chess. Howard Lederer relocated to Las Vegas in 1993 and competed in cash games for the following 10 years. When the WPT grew in popularity, Howard decided to play more tournaments.
