Howard Lederer was born into in a family of five where he loved gambling on various card games at a young age. He discovered himself becoming very competitive in the above-mentioned card games as he was competing against his dad. After graduating from high school, Howard decided to place college on hold for a bit and relocated to New York to participate in some serious chess. While participating in chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard's initial 2 years were rough as he played countless hours and lost a majority of the time. He earned some extra cash by being an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he possibly could better his game by balancing his life away from poker. He brought about an effort to get more rest and focus attention more on the game.

The real advancement in his skills began when he began playing at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the the most favorable gamblers would frequently challenge each other. Howard had access into some of the best minds in chess. With their help, he would sharpen his strategic thinking abilities. Howard applied these strategy ideas to the game of NL Texas Holdem.

Howard also helped his sibling Annie Duke learn poker. Annie Duke was a great student of poker as she constantly asked questions about how to make the proper choice. Howard told Annie to move out to Las Vegas and compete in the WSOP tournaments. Annie is one of the greatest female players the poker arena ever. He relocated to Sin City in 1993 and played cash games for the following 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, Howard made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
