Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five in which he loved taking part in various card games at a young age. He discovered himself getting really aggressive in the above-mentioned card games as he was playing his father. After graduating from secondary school, Howard decided to put higher education on hold for a bit and moved away to New York City to compete in some serious chess. While playing chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard's first 2 years were tough as he would play many hours and don't win most times. He made some extra cash by becoming an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He judged he possibly could better his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He made an effort to get more rest and focus attention more on poker.

The real advancement in his skills happened when he began playing at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the the most favorable players would often wager against each other. He had access into several of the best minds in chess. With their assistance, he would sharpen his cunning thinking abilities. Howard applied these strategy ideas to the game of NL texas hold'em.

He also helped his sibling Annie Duke learn poker. Annie Duke was an excellent student of the game as she would always be asking questions about how to make the correct choice. He told Annie Duke to move out to Sin City and play in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie is one of the greatest women players the poker world today. Howard moved to Sin City in Nineteen Ninety Three and participated in money games for the following 10 years. When the WPT grew in popularity, he decided to play more tournaments.
